1975 Topps Page by Page: Page 58 (514-522)

I'm sure that you all remember that I finally completed my 1975 Topps set.

Now that it's done I thought it would be fun to look through the set and talk about it. Going page by page seemed like a good way to go about it. Hopefully you find it interesting to read what I have to say.

How about we continue with page 58?

0. Although, there's at least one on the checklist card.

Checklist cards are cool. And, I guess whatever's going on with Cruz's hat is pretty cool. Not a lot of great stuff on this page.

My favorite card on the page

I mean, can a checklist be my favorite card? Pretty generic group of cards on this page otherwise. Other than some bad airbrushing. But, at least the checklist lists the card of 1975 World Series hero Luis Tiant.

1. Finally! And a good one to boot.

1975 World Series participants are definitely cool.

My favorite card on the page

It's no contest on this page. As a Red Sox fan collecting the 1975 set in part because of the 1975 World Series, the Tiant might be the key card in the set. He was in the middle of a stellar run for the Sox, and was an absolute monster in the Series as he cemented his status as Red Sox Legend. Tiant started three games in the series, going 2-0. Two complete games, including a shutout. His one bad game was the one he didn't complete...and a game the Red Sox won anyway. He certainly did his part.

Card of the Week: 1978 Topps #345

What a great looking card. The card design is very understated, which wasn’t exactly typical for the seventies. But, the simple frame leaves it up to the picture to supply the pizzazz. This is a great “action” shot of Tiant making at least one fan very happy.

I always wonder when looking at older cards how the printing companies worked. Look at the “P” in the baseball in the upper right corner. It’s off-center. Why? Was the printing company unable to print it in the center of the ball? Was it a case of the different color plates not lining up properly from one printing to the next? Did Topps decide it wasn’t worth the effort to get it to print properly? The kids collecting cards weren’t going to notice a slight imperfection like that. Is it like that on all the Tiant cards? With this kind of sloppiness so widespread during the older sets, how did card collecting take off in the first place?

The offset P aside, I still think this is a wonderful card. Love the red hat. Love the face of Tiant. Love the simple glimpse into his day. Nicely dine.

Except for the P.
