Sophie Phillips Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has another visitor! Sophie Phillips is passionate about environmental racism, a talented pianist, and the current Miss Milford. I was excited that she was willing to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So, let's see what happens when Sophie Phillips visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Milford crown?
I hugged my cat and dogs and ate a nice dinner with my family!

This year’s Miss Milford competition was virtual. What did you like about that experience?
At the time of the pageant, I was going to be visiting my family in New York. When I found out the date of the pageant, I was going to have to cancel my drive up. Because it ended up being virtual, I was able to visit them AND compete at the same time. I feel it gives more girls a chance to compete because they have the flexibility of being anywhere and they don’t have to risk exposure to COVID-19.

What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Milford competition that will help you at Miss Delaware?
I learned that my platform is one that a lot of people don’t know much about. It gave me the confidence and drive to dive into my platform more and think of creative ways to teach the public about environmental racism issues in my state and in the country as well as ways to make a difference. That confidence and excitement about change will help me show the Miss Delaware judges what I am capable of.

How did you select your social impact, “Environmental Racism in Delaware”?
My masters thesis is all about environmental justice issues. In my degree program, Energy and Environmental Policy, I’m learning about the history of environmental racism and everything I can do make a change. While learning about issues in my state in particular, I knew I had to educate others about the reality that we live in. My goal is to raise awareness, change policy, and hopefully drive others to want change as well.

As a talented pianist, what do you enjoy the most about performing on stage?
I love getting lost in the music and bringing others into that feeling as well. I often forget the audience is even there!

What is your personal fitness routine?
Before the pandemic, I was going to the gym a lot, often taking spin and yoga classes. Since the pandemic has started, I’ve gotten more into running (even though it does take some motivation to do so). A couple of weeks ago, my parents got a Peloton bike, which has given me the opportunity to get back into spinning. When I was in high school, I completed two 100-mile bike rides in Lake Tahoe, CA, raising over $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and in college I was the president of the University of Delaware Cycling Team. Cycling is one of my favorite things to do, so getting back into spinning has been really awesome. I also LOVE hiking! The past few weekends I’ve been able to do some really awesome hikes, like Old Rag in Shenandoah National park and Mt. Tammany in the Delaware Water Gap.

If you could be a Disney Character for a week, who would you choose? Why?
I would be Snow White because she talks to animals! In addition to environmental justice, I also take a lot of wildlife classes and spent my time in undergrad learning all about the environment. I absolutely love animals, so the opportunity to speak to them would be so rad.

You grew up playing softball. What did you like about that opportunity?

The team atmosphere! We were like a family that always had each other’s backs. We each had to play our part to be successful. I am still close with a lot of the girls I played with and I thank them for the love I still have for teamwork and collaboration.

Is there a feature or activity at a Major League Baseball game that you’d especially like to experience?
I always bring my softball mitt to games so I can catch a foul ball, but I’ve never actually been able to. The opportunity to catch a ball, whether it be a foul ball or a home run ball would be a dream. Even better…if I could get the team (preferably the Mets) to sign it for me. I grew up in New York so I’m a huge Mets fan. My dad grew up right next to Shea Stadium, so the Mets have been in our lives forever. If I could meet the Mets, especially members of the 1986 World Series team or Jose Reyes (my favorite player), all my little girl dreams would come true.

Riley Slate Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has another visitor! Riley Slate is passionate about homeless healthcare, a talented singer, and the current Miss Brandywine. I was so excited she was willing to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more!

So, let's see what happens when Riley Slate visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Brandywine crown?

After winning, my Mom and I went to our favorite restaurant! Following that, I had to drive back up to school because I had clinical rotations the

 following morning at 8am! I was so happy to win the Miss Brandywine crown and have the opportunity to represent the exact area I am from in Delaware!

What part of the upcoming Miss Delaware competition are you most nervous about?

I wouldn't say that I am nervous about anything, I just want to make sure that I'm able to convey my most authentic self to the judges and to the audience!

What has surprised you the most about your short time as Miss Brandywine?

Definitely all of the love and support I have received from my peers and individuals In the community

How did you select your social impact initiative, “Health for Hope”?

My FAVORITE question! It was through my patients that I was inspired to pursue my social impact initiative, Health for Hope: Providing Healthcare to the Homeless. The  program that I am currently enrolled in, has created a Free Clinic, within the city of Allentown, PA, to provide health care to over 1,000 homeless men in the city. As a student in the program, I volunteer my time to see my own patients, diagnose, and treat this marginalized group of individuals – completely free of charge. The love and gratitude that the men display to myself, as well as my peers, is truly the most rewarding part of the entire experience. To me, it is so important to not only provide these individuals with the care that they deserve, but it is also imperative that as a community, we give them the respect that they deserve.

As a talented singer, what is your favorite part about performing on stage?

I love taking a song that is meaningful to myself, and being able to connect with the audience.

What is your personal fitness routine?

I come from a family of runners, so running has always been a huge part of both my life and my exercise routine. I completed my first marathon in September of 2017, which was a huge bucket list item of mine. Since then, I definitely haven't run anywhere near 26 miles at a time, but I do try to get outside and run every day if I'm able!

What do you remember about attending your first Phillies game?

I was really young, so I don't remember too much, but I definitely remember the Chickies and Pete's fries!

If you had an extra ticket to a Phillies/Red Sox game, who would you bring with you? Why?

My dad of course! He is a huge Philly sports fan and I would love to share that experience with him!

Is there a feature or activity at a baseball game that you’d especially like to experience?

Obviously throwing out the first pitch! I'm not sure if I would be able to actually reach home plate, but I'd like to try!

Victoria Muir Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has a new visitor! Victoria Muir is a STEM advocate, a Phillies fan, and the current Miss Capital. She will also mark the

third straight visitor from the state of Delaware! I was thrilled she was able to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So let's see what happens when Victoria Muir visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Capital crown?

I celebrated with my biggest role model and my best friend - my mom, Julia! My mom has been my biggest support in my Miss Delaware journey. After winning Miss Capital, I went out to dinner with my mom. We talked about how exciting it is to compete in Miss Delaware for the second time this year!

What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Capital competition that will help you at Miss Delaware?

Preparation is key in Miss America, and I think that preparation is one of my biggest strengths. I practiced interview questions for weeks leading up the competition, and I was diligent about practicing my talent performance as well. I felt more prepared for this competition than ever before, and I think my preparedness helped me succeed. 

What are you most looking forward to about your time as Miss Capital?

I have my eye on the prize this year competing in Miss Delaware, and I cannot think of a better way to prepare for the state title than getting to represent the capital of the state, Dover! I am looking forward to exploring Dover this year and partnering with Dover-based organizations to promote my social impact initiative - Celebrating Women in STEM. 

How did you select your social impact initiative “Celebrating Women in STEM”?

Science has always been my biggest passion. I am a chemical

engineer by training, and I am currently pursuing my PhD in Bioengineering at University of Pennsylvania. Women are underrepresented in science, and the lack of diversity in science stifles innovation. I strive to be a role model for young girls to show them that no matter their background, they are needed in STEM!

For your talent, you’ll be performing a science experiment. What goes into selecting the best experiment to show off?

Picking a science experiment for a Miss America talent is the most difficult yet most fun part of the entire competition prep. The science has to be 1) big enough to fill a stage, 2) quick enough to happen in less than 90 seconds, 3) affordable, and 4) easy to setup/take down. Plus, the talent can't involve fire, and I also can't have the help of anyone else. These challenges are hugely difficult to navigate in selecting a dramatic science demo, but also a super fun problem for me to think about. I can tell you this - I will be engineering something super cool for the Miss Delaware stage!

If you could be any Marvel character for a week, which would it be? Why?

I would love to be Spiderman! I always loved playing on playgrounds and climbing up in trees as a kid. I think it would be so cool to swing around buildings for a day! Plus, I am fascinated by spider webs - the material that spiders make their webs out of has some amazing properties that can be used in biomedical research for wound healing and surgical glue. How cool is that!

As a Phillies fan, who is your favorite Red Sox player? Why?

I will preface by saying I am most avidly a football fan, but I grew up close to my grandpa who is a baseball history enthusiast and a Boston native. Because of his inspiration, I have done a little research into baseball history. So, I would pick Cy Young as my favorite Red Sox player of all time. He lead the Red Sox to the win the first World Series in 1903, and I think that is a pretty cool legacy to leave, along with his numerous other accomplishments!

Which Phillies player have you most enjoyed watching this season?

Of course, our entire city was ecstatic about Bryce Harper joining the Phillies this season. While it may have been a rocky start, it looks like things are picking up steam for Harper and the Phillies. I know he will be an exciting player to watch the rest of the season and many more seasons to come!

Is there a feature or aspect of a game at Fenway Park that you’d especially like to experience?

Fenway Park is rich in baseball history and American history in general. I lived in Boston for a summer, and I could feel the energy and loyalty the city has to the Red Sox and Fenway. It is on my bucket list to take my grandpa to a game at Fenway. I think that would be a magical experience for us both!

Taylor Johnson Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has a new visitor! Taylor Johnson is a melanoma awareness advocate, a singer, and the current Miss Sussex County.

I was thrilled she was able to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So let's see what happens when Taylor Johnson visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Sussex County crown?

I celebrated winning Miss Sussex County with my sorority, Phi Mu! I initially had plans to hang out with sisters anyways but whenever I saw a sister that night, they congratulated me and I wasn’t expecting it! I was just hoping to have a fun night with my sisters, I wasn’t concerned about anyone recognizing my win.

What has surprised you the most about your time as Miss Sussex County? 

What surprised me the most about my time as Miss Sussex County actually just happened! I had received a few messages from sisters, and there’s a photo of my mom and I at Salisbury University’s Relay for Life which was held in April. That photo is being used as an advertisement to get students involved in campus activities and organizations. My mom and I are at the front of the line, and I’m wearing my Miss Sussex County sash. I was so touched and started crying. Not only will my legacy be documented for the next few years at SU, but there’s a more important reason to why I was so touched. Keep reading to find out!

You won a non-finalist award at the last Miss Delaware competition. What was that experience like?

I thought I was dreaming! After not making top 5 during a year I

really believed I had a shot, I thought I was aging out with no progress from my first year. And as a “veteran”, that is heartbreaking. But during the brunch the next day they handed out some awards and announced I won non-finalist on stage interview. I was floored. The best part was that my question had to do with my sorority and hazing, topics I am super passionate about. I had a wonderful time in Phi Mu at SU because I had a non-hazing experience.

What can you tell me about your social impact initiative “Protect the skin you’re in - melanoma awareness”?

Protect the Skin You’re In - Melanoma Awareness is in memory of my mom, who was a stage 3 melanoma skin cancer survivor, which has a 60% survival rate.The best way to summarize it is it’s about the dangers of indoor and outdoor tanning, and the side effects that you would never see coming. Side effects that weakened my mom, and ultimately took her life last month. In my social impact statement, I talk about how UV radiation builds up over time and doesn’t show up until later in life. For years, I have had people tell me “You have to die from something,” and now my comeback will consist of “Have you thought about the people you will be leaving behind then, and how they will feel?”. Skin Cancer isn’t just something you can cut out and be done with, and my mom learned that the hard way. I’m 25 and I don’t have a mom now because of melanoma. We need to start taking it seriously, because it is on the rise because of tanning ignorance. That’s why that photo at my alma mater means so much to me. SU had no clue what had happened, and they put that photo up eight days after she passed. It’s a sign that she’s still with me.

As a talented singer, what is your favorite part about performing on stage?

My favorite part would have to be is finding the perfect song and

nailing it. My talent for my final Miss Delaware pageant was “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia and so many people said it was my best performance. The last 40 seconds of the song you truly see my love for this piece come to life, and I wish I could show you! I almost cried, that’s how powerful it felt, and that has never happened before. The stage has been my home since I was 14, and it always will be.

What is your personal fitness routine?

Crossfit is how I’ve been working out the past three years. I haven’t been able to go since graduating in May, with everything that has been going on the past few months, but I miss it so much! My first few months I lost 10-15 pounds, so I swear by it. It’s the only thing that works for me.

Who is your favorite current Red Sox player? Why?

Andrew Benintendi, and please don’t judge me, but my reason why is because he’s my baseball crush. I saw that he retweeted a tweet, someone’s grandmother has his bobblehead, watches all his games and cuts out all his photos and he thought it was pretty cool. Some people could get weirded out about that stuff, but he was so sweet about it and I think that says a lot about his character.

Is there a feature or activity at Fenway Park that you’d especially like to experience?

I would love to do the Take Me to Fenway tour! I like being in control, and the words exclusive and private sold it to me (I’m a Virgo, and those words are my kryptonite). Fenway Park holds so much history, and it’s such an iconic park, getting to visit would be such an honor.

If you had an extra ticket to see the Red Sox play at Fenway, who would you bring with you? Why?

I’d probably bring one of my fellow titleholders, Danielle Taylor (Miss First State) with me! I always have a blast with her, and she makes me laugh easily. Just my car rides with her are memorable, so a day trip like that I could never forget.

Hillary May Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has a new visitor! Hillary May is a singer, a mental health advocate, and the newly crowned Miss Delaware! She also comes from a family of Cardinals fans. I was thrilled that she wanted to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more! I enjoyed everything she had to say, and I’m sure you will too. 

So let’s see what happens when Hillary May visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Delaware crown?

I know it sounds crazy, but I didn’t really celebrate in any formal way at all. I was proud of myself and it was nice to see all my family at the competition, but once I won I was in full-on work mode. I was so grateful to be given this opportunity that any of the other girls I competed with deserved just as much as I did. I felt I owed it to them and to the organization that I put my whole heart into it right away -- and I still think that to myself when I get up every day. The day after I was crowned I had my first two interviews and the journey began!

What’s something you learned about yourself at the Miss Delaware competition that will help you at Miss America?
This was my first time ever competing in an official pageant system so the entire year taught me a lot. I was lucky enough to win the first local I competed in and then went on to do the same at Miss Delaware. Throughout the whole process I was getting advice from everyone everywhere and I was incredibly grateful for it, but in the end I decided that absolutely everything I did – what I wore, what I sang, what I wrote, what I said, etc. – was going to be 100% created and executed my way. I didn’t worry about fitting into any sort of mold, I just put my complete and genuine self on that stage. I’m still getting advice, and I’m still listening to it all, but when it comes to Miss America my approach will be the same. If the judges want me to be Miss America, then I better show them me on that stage.

What part of going to Miss America are you most excited about?

I am honored and humbled to have this opportunity to go to Miss America. Even more than that, I am most excited to be competing in the first class of state titleholders within the new Miss America 2.0 system. This was my first competition ever in an official system, and I won. I think that speaks volumes to what Miss America 2.0 is all about. She is not a beauty queen but a leader, an advocate, and a source of confidence and empowerment for others. I’ve been hard at work in my community for years, been on stage since I was 3, and honestly enjoy any opportunity to grow in my personal and professional skills. THAT is why I was successful in Miss America 2.0, because I’m a real-life girl boss, not because I am a seasoned beauty queen – and that is the most exciting thing in the world.

How did you select your social impact initiative “Let’s Talk: Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health”?

I’ve been involved in the Mental Health community for some time now: being a group therapy facilitator at a grief center for young children, speaking at various conferences and convocations about mental health awareness and suicide prevention, and working with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to provide suicide prevention training and awareness. My life’s journey initially lead me to this community when my best friend lost his father to suicide when we were in high school. Little did I know, the support system and resources I would find in the mental health community would later become even more personal when I battled depression myself. I was lucky. My battle was easier than most because had the knowledge, the support, and the army I needed to get me through such a hard time, so if I can share that knowledge and support with others through my journey in the Miss America Organization then maybe I can make someone else’s battle a bit easier too. Maybe I can create a national army so no one ever has to fight it alone.

As a talented singer, what is your favorite part about performing on stage?

My favorite part of performing is interacting with the audience. I’ve always said that you know you’ve made it when your audience is made up of people and not shampoo bottles. To me the audience is everything. I feed off their energy so much. I know that I don’t have to be perfect so long as they have a good time – because to me that is what performing is all about! I’m so excited to perform my talent at Miss America because I think my song does exactly that; it connects with the audience in a way that will (hopefully) have them dancing in their chairs and leave them with a smile on their faces!

If you could be a Harry Potter character for a week, which would you choose? Why?

My Harry Potter character is Nymphadora Tonks 100%. She is not

a huge character in the books but whenever she is mentioned you know what is going on is important because she always shows up for her friends when they need her. I think that is one of the most admirable qualities in a person. But also her hair changes colors and I think that is wicked cool!

Growing up in a family of Cardinals fans, who is your favorite Red Sox player? Why?

My favorite Red Sox players are all the guys on the bench, because while they have to watch the same things I have to watch, they actually have to act excited when the Sox win, and I really feel for them.

The Red Sox beat the Cardinals the last two times they’ve faced them in the World Series. Do you have a favorite Red Sox - Cardinals moment?

My favorite Sox – Cards moment is that stillness and silence when the first hitter steps up to bat, the pitcher is standing there, and the game is about to begin. There is so much potential in that moment. So much hope…

If you had an extra ticket to watch a Red Sox - Cardinals game at Fenway, who would you bring with you? Why?

If I had an extra ticket I would bring my grandfather with me. All my life my grandfather has been the biggest Cardinals fan. No matter where we were, at his house, at our house, on vacation, it didn’t matter. He was on the couch and the Cards were on the TV. He passed very recently so to give him the opportunity to enjoy one more game, and to see the look on his face when the Cards WON, would be the greatest gift.

Amanda Debus Visits Section 36!

her. The current Miss Delaware has actually become a big Pittsburgh Pirates fan. But, I’m guessing that has a lot to do with the fact that her boyfriend, Chad Kuhl, is hoping to leave Spring Training as a member of the Pirates starting rotation. Since the Pirates open the season in a couple weeks against the Red Sox in Fenway Park, I thought it would be fun (and appropriate) to see if Amanda would be willing to answer some questions about herself, Chad, and her time as Miss Delaware. Thankfully she agreed.

So, let's see what happens when Amanda Debus visits Section 36!

You’ve worn a few crowns in your life. What was special about winning the Miss Delaware title?

Each title (Miss Delaware’s Outstanding Teen 2008, Miss Delaware Teen USA 2011 & Miss Delaware 2016) holds a special place in my heart for different reasons. Winning Miss DE this year was pretty special though, given it was our 75th anniversary of the pageant. I’m extremely nostalgic, so being able to wear my state’s sash at Miss America, in historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ — where so many of my Miss DE role models have walked across the stage before me — was awesome!

What has surprised you about your time as Miss DE?

I am always prepared for anything, especially this year, but one

thing that has surprised me was the amount of support I have received over my choice in platform — ALL-AWARE: Allergy Awareness. I have been invited to speak at National food allergy conferences, State health fairs, and various interviews. The allergy community really stood behind me during my time at Miss America. I received so many well wishes from parents, teens, tons of people who have had their life somehow affected by allergies during their life. It was humbling to hear their stories.

What does the future hold for you after you turn over your crown in a few months? 

After I crown Miss DE 2017 in June, I plan on using my scholarships that I earned through competing and return to school. After finishing up my degree in the fall semester, I will be looking forward to teaching health and physical education in Delaware schools!

How do we help kids with food allergies in our schools, or wherever they may be?

When I was a kid, I was bullied due to my allergies and asthma, and I hate for students to be bullied, let alone bullied over health

conditions. When I go into schools, I stress that it is important to be considerate with the needs of others. I teach kids to “Be a P.A.L: Protect A Life” — an initiative started by Food Allergy Research & Education, Inc. — which help children learn how to be a good friend to kids with food allergies.

How did you meet your boyfriend, Chad Kuhl?

We actually met in middle school! We were both in the same class at Everett Meredith Middle School in Middletown, DE. We then went to high school and college together as well. 

Chad’s Major League debut was last year on a Sunday night against Clayton Kershaw. Quite a set-up. What was it like for you to watch that night unfold?

I was a barrel of nerves. I was fortunate to make it up to PNC Park to see his first game and it was amazing. Unlike anything you could expect! His family (Mom, Dad, 4 siblings & their significant others/kids), my mom, and some of his friends were there as well. If you watch the game, you can see me and his oldest brother behind

home plate, and we were going insane — especially during the home plate tag-out! Win or lose, I’m always proud of how he plays, but beating Kershaw was icing on the cake that night!

I’m sure you’ve spent a lot of time inside PNC Park. What’s your favorite feature?

The view, obviously! That’s what made me fall in love with Pittsburgh! The view of the bridges and the river is second to none. I like watching the game from the top of the rotunda sometimes, that way I can catch the city sights at the same time.

How do you deal with Pirates twitter, or other ways people express their opinions, when Chad’s on the mound?

I love hearing from his fans, I just don’t engage in the negative stuff. I’m not oblivious. I know that people like to ‘express’ their opinions during sports games, but those statements have no baring on how Chad will play. 

I’m guessing you grew up in Phillies country. Was it tough switching allegiances to the Pirates?

My family is actually Baltimore fans. I grew up watching the likes

of Cal Ripkin Jr and Mike Mussina in Camden Yards. Luckily, they're in different leagues, so they don't often play each other. This year will be interesting, though, as there are two Pirates-Orioles series on the schedule. I’ll tell you how it plays out! 

What are your hopes for Chad this season?

That’s simple — I’m just hoping he has a strong (and healthy!) year. He worked so hard over the off season, and during spring training. I’m just so excited to see what all comes of this season for Chad and the Pirates!

I think we can all agree with Amanda and hope for a strong and heathy season from Chad this season.

As always, I want to give a huge thank you to Amanda for taking the time to visit with us. It was exciting to be able to branch out with some new lines of questions. Another big thank you to her for providing so many wonderful pictures to go along with the interview. They definitely made the post much better.
