Amber Barto Visits Section 36!

Genie Bunton Photo
Section 36 had another visitor! Amber Barto is passionate about community servic
e, involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network , and the current Miss Arizona. I was so glad that she was willing to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So, let's see what happens when Amber Barto visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Arizona crown?

Honestly, I celebrated first by eating some Raising Canes Chicken but then I actually just got straight to work on all the plans I wanted to initiate.

What did you learn about yourself during the Miss Arizona competition that will help you at Miss America?

It just reminded me to enjoy every moment because it was so incredible being back on the stage after so long. Especially after the year we just went through with the pandemic, I want to make sure I enjoy every second of this experience and this mindset will help me really make the most of my time at Miss America.

Is there a specific goal you’d like to accomplish during your time as Miss Arizona?

I would really like to pair up with our major in-state universities to provide potential scholarships to the women who compete in Miss Arizona as well as increase participation by at least 25%. In addition, I want to help kids all over the state find the community service projects they are passionate about.

How did you select your social impact initiative, “Leadership Through Service?
Community service is something that has been integrated in my life and I have personally seen the benefits of volunteerism. After losing my mentor to Pancreatic Cancer when I was 13, I wanted to give back to the cause that took her from us and this helped me develop a deep passion for community service. When competing for Miss Arizona, I knew the legacy I wanted to leave behind was a lasting ripple effect of individuals discovering their passion for a particular cause or volunteer project so therefore it only seemed right that this would be my social impact initiative.

You’re heavily involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. What can you tell me about the organization, and your involvement?

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a Nationwide organization that is working to be the go to organization for Pancreatic Cancer. Not only does it raise millions of dollars each year, but it funds its own research grants, launches major awareness campaigns, and offers services to patients all over the world. I got involved when I was 14 years old and lost my mentor to Pancreatic Cancer. I started small by just sitting on the committees for the Phoenix Affiliate, but now I have spent the past few years serving as the Communications Director where I oversee all media and marketing outreach. I am very thankful for this community and am happy to have PanCan in my life.

If you could be a Disney character for a week, who would you choose? Why?

It would absolutely be Cinderella. She has been my favorite princess from a young age and I truly think it would just be a dream to be her for a week.

What is your personal fitness routine?

We have a wonderful fitness sponsor in Arizona, Scott with Scott’s Training Systems, and I have been training with him since I was 14 years old. I go to him about 3-4 times a week and do cardio as well, and then add in hot yoga and dance throughout the week.

If you had an extra ticket to see a Red Sox vs Diamondbacks baseball game, who would you take with you? Why?

My mom’s side of the family is from Boston so I have a lot of Red Sox fans in my circle. My uncle and I are the most into Boston sports and he is a huge Red Sox fan so I would probably take him with me.

Is there a feature or activity during a Diamondbacks game at Chase Field that you’d especially like to experience?

I have always dreamed of throwing the first pitch at a home game and this is something I am hoping to do once as Miss Arizona.

---

That would be quite the experience!

As always, I want to thank Amber for visiting with us, and for sending along the pictures to go with the interview.

As Amber continues her time as Miss Arizona, I encourage you to follow her title's Instagram and Facebook accounts. You should also check out the official Miss Arizona website. They're great ways to keep track of everything she has going on!

I also want to wish her the best of luck when she competes for the Miss America crown this winter. It would be fantastic to have another Section 36 visitor wear that crown!

Thanks again Amber, and good luck!

Vivian Zhong Visits Section 36!

Photo: Lindsay King Portraits
Section 36 has another visitor! Vivian Zhong is passionate about finding less invasive cancer treatments, a talented pianist, and the current Miss Michigan. I was excited that she was willing to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So, let's see what happens when Vivian Zhong visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Michigan crown?

I celebrated winning the Miss Michigan title by taking a trip up north! I love Michigan summers and was able to make a trip to Mackinac Island and Traverse City, which are two of my favorite places in the summer. I am a huge fan of the outdoors so I loved taking in the nice weather and amazing views! After that trip, which was only a few days, I came back home to begin my duties as Miss Michigan and work on upcoming plans for my Social Impact Initiative.

Is there a specific goal you’d like to accomplish during your time as Miss Michigan?

One of my specific goals as Miss Michigan is to advocate for childhood cancer research. Only 4% of the NIH's annual budget goes towards pediatric cancer research. Children are our future and they deserve more than just 4%. I am currently in the works of meeting with a Congresswoman from Michigan to discuss the potential to work together to advocate for more funding. I hope the legacy I leave is one of hope and kindness.

What part of the Miss America competition are you most nervous about?

I am not nervous about any parts of the competition! Participating in this organization has allowed me to grow into a confident woman. I am more excited than anything to meet all of the amazing women and to represent my state.

How did you select your social impact initiative, “Golden Warriors: Fight Like a Kid”?

I am an incoming first year medical student, and I have always loved working with children. One of my friends passed away just before her 21st birthday due to complications from her chemotherapy and radiation treatments that she had undergone as a child for her Leukemia. I honor her by advocating for more non-invasive treatment options so that children who beat cancer don't have complications later in their lives. Because of this, I chose to work as a pediatric medical assistant during the pandemic and saw firsthand the struggles many children face while in the hospital. My career ambitions and my passions led me to choosing childhood cancer as my Social Impact Initiative, and I am so excited to help serve these children in every capacity possible.

As a talented pianist, what is your favorite part about performing on stage?

I have been playing the piano since the age of 3, so it has always been a passion of mine. As part of my Social Impact Initiative, I perform children's songs for hospitals as part of their music therapy program. My absolute favorite part of playing piano is being able to share my passion with others, especially on stage.

If you could be a Disney Character for a week, who would you choose? Why?

I would choose to be Mulan! As an Asian-American, I am very proud of my heritage. I love how she was the first Disney princess who fought for herself and her family.

I actually dress up as the character Mulan and visit hospitals and pediatric cancer patients with a local non-profit called Crowns Against Cancer. I love being able to bring some joy to these children during such a tough time.

What book have you recently enjoyed reading?

My favorite book at the moment is "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi. It is such an inspiring memoir of a late neurosurgery resident. It gives me a lot to think about when it comes to living life to its fullest and taking in every opportunity presented to me.

If you had an extra ticket to see the Red Sox play the Tigers, who would you take with you? Why?

I would bring my mom. My mom and I are the best of friends, and she is by far my biggest supporter. We love traveling and going to sports games together, so I would definitely bring my mom.

Is there a feature or activity during a game at Comerica Park that you’d especially like to experience?

As an avid baseball fan, I would absolutely love to throw the first pitch at a Tigers game! I have been to many games with my family and love the atmosphere of the games. I may not be the most accurate pitcher, but it would be such an amazing experience to stand on that mound as Miss Michigan.

---

That would be quite an experience!

As always, I want to thank Vivian for visiting with us, and for sending along the picture to go with the interview.

As Vivian continues her time as Miss Michigan, I encourage you to follow her title's Instagram and Facebook account. You can also check out the Miss Michigan website. They're great ways to keep track of everything she has going on!

I also want to wish her the best of luck when she competes for the Miss America crown this winter. It would be fantastic to have another section 36 visitor wear that crown!

Thanks again Vivian, and good luck!

Madison Hawkes Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has another visitor! Madison Hawkes is passionate about fighting cancer, a fairytale princess, and the current Miss Seacoast. I was so excited that she wanted to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So, let's see what happens when Madison Hawkes visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Seacoast title?

The very first thing I did was FaceTime my mom! She unfortunately was not able to attend the competition, so you can imagine how excited she was when I called her wearing my crown and sash. I actually had traveled to the competition from Maine, as I was house sitting with some friends. So after I drove back to Maine, my friends and I turned on the fire pit, put on some music, and celebrated by just unwinding and soaking up each other’s company.

What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Seacoast competition that will help you when you compete for Miss New Hampshire?

Though it is titled as a competition, the most important thing is to have fun. I used to go into locals a nervous wreck and compared myself to the other incredible participants. We have to lift each other up and remember that this is a sisterhood above all.

Is there a specific goal you’d like to accomplish during your time as Miss Seacoast?

With my year as Miss Seacoast I would love to expand my platform, The American Cancer Society. I would do this going into not only schools, but also small businesses, to discuss how to know the signs of cancer, how to prevent it, as well as how to support patients and families affected. As someone who has had their family be heavily affected by cancer, I wish I had someone who provided support and resources from an organization such as The American Cancer Society, so I want to do my part to be that helping hand.

How did you select your American Cancer Society social impact initiative?

Right before the pandemic hit, my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. A couple months after that her best friend as well as one of my aunts would also be diagnosed. My mom had to quit her job because the chemotherapy was making her so weak. I was a full time student at Plymouth State University and got multiple full time jobs to do what I could to provide for my family. On weekends I would drive two hours home to help cook, clean, do anything my mom needed me to do. When I was sitting with her one night on the couch because she couldn’t sleep and wanted company, all I could think was how blessed we are to have what we have and how some families couldn’t even afford proper care. So I did my research and discovered The American Cancer Society. I got to work with them right away, helping with the Rockingham County Relay for Life, and we were able to raise over $75,000! They have truly become another family to me, and I’m beyond excited for some projects I have planned with them so stay tuned!

You’re on the peer board for Reach 1 Teach 1 Love 1. What can you tell me about that?

One of my good friends, Marena Beale, the current Miss Kingston’s Outstanding Teen, reached out to me about an incredible opportunity to be part of this organization almost a year ago now. She knew how involved I was with different mental health clubs and organizations from Astros United, to the Center for Life Management, and thought I would be a perfect fit on the new Peer Board! I take on the role as Marketing & Events Coordinator, where I get us connected with different events and opportunities and create different ways to promote what we are doing. But it’s not all planning and going to events, each of us on the board has a story about their mental health journey and they have the opportunity to share it on our website. For example, in my story I talk about my journey as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, growing up in a small town that wasn’t that accepting, and how I overcame hate to love my true self.

What is your personal fitness routine?

As someone who is very music-based, I tend to do a lot of

dance workouts. I used to go to the gym at school, but when it closed due to COVID-19 protocols, I needed to find a different way to burn off those college calories as I call them! I discovered these YouTube dance workout videos and loved them, my favorites are the ABBA dance workout videos!

You’re the founder of NH Fairytale Princess. What’s it like to be involved with that?

My small business, Fairytale New Hampshire, was founded on the ideas of spreading magic and inspiring others. We have made it a priority to be body inclusive, love inclusive, and family inclusive. Being able to see this cast grow from just two people, to a group of friends with theatre based backgrounds has been absolutely incredible to say the least. We have gone to events from northern New Hampshire, to Massachusetts! We were even able to spread magic virtually during the pandemic from the comfort of our homes. It has helped me grow not only my business, marketing and media skills, but also my leadership skills in a way I never had experienced before. The amount of lives we have touched makes the entire journey worth it.

Who is your favorite Red Sox player? Why?

Though he is now a former Red Sox player, Big Papi himself, David Ortiz, will always be my favorite! Not only did he show dedication to his team, but he also showed dedication to his family and loved ones, which is the most important thing. He gave 110% on and off the field every time and has continued to be a positive influence on Sox fans past retirement.

Is there a feature or activity during a game at Fenway Park that you’d especially like to experience?

I genuinely cannot wait to get back to Fenway, be surrounded by fellow Sox fans, and hear everyone belt out “Sweet Caroline”. That is when I think fans truly come together as one and show their support for one another. It is always one of the most positive experiences of every Sox game and I cannot wait to experience that again!

---

I can't wait to get back to that myself!

As always, I want to thank Madison for visiting with us, and for sending along the fantastic pictures to go with the interview.

Since I know you want to keep track of Madison during her time as Miss Seacoast, I suggest you follow her title's Instagram account to make sure you don't miss anything she has going on!

I also want to wish Madison luck when she competes for the Miss New Hampshire crown. It would be great to have another Section 36 visitor win that title.

Thanks again Madison, and good luck!

Harley Tilque Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has another visitor! Harley Tilque is passionate about early action to fight cancer, a talented dancer, and the current Miss Metrolina's Outstanding Teen. I was excited that she wanted to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So, let's see what happens when Harley Tilque visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Metrolina’s Outstanding Teen crown?

Well of course no celebration is complete without a dinner and dessert.  So I went to Applebee’s with some of my friends and family! It was such a fun night and we were there celebrating until the restaurant closed.

How did you select your social impact initiative dealing with Ovarian Cancer Awareness?

In 2012 my grandmother was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer.  She was only given 2 month to live. However, she was offered the opportunity to become part of a research study and was given 5 more years with us.

After we lost her unexpectedly (she was cancer free when she

passed), I decided to change my platform to T.E.A.L. -Take Early Action & Live. I wanted to continue what she had started and honor her as well.

After a lot of research I learned that the symptoms of this disease are very vague and only 15% get diagnosed in the early stages. I also learned that it also does not get the funding it deserves because there is no screening test to detect this “silent killer”, the nickname for ovarian cancer. Over the past 3 years I have been developing my platform, I have raised over $4,000 towards research, have helped to spread

the word about the symptoms

and hopefully will be able to help families across the country.

Is there a specific goal you’d like to accomplish during your time as Miss Metrolina’s Outstanding Teen?

Only time will tell but I hope to become the next Miss North Carolina Outstanding Teen! My committee has helped me prepare for this pageant for almost 2 years and I am ready to show everyone all the hard work i’ve put in.

You recently had the opportunity to compete in the Summit cheer competition. What was that experience like?

IT WAS A DREAM! Being new to the cheer community it was honestly overwhelming. Summit is like the super bowl for cheerleaders and if you are lucky enough to win, you get a personalized ring! My team had worked so hard the entire season and we were so proud of the performance we left on the mat. All the support from the team and parents was so electric to be around and we even got to go to Animal Kingdom and MGM Hollywood Studios.

If you could be a Disney character for a week, who would you choose? Why?

For sure Venellope Von Schweetz from Wreck-It-Ralph. Not only does she get to race go-karts made from Candy but she has an amazing best friend like Ralph to always hang with. I would love to be in her place and live in Candy Land, sounds like heaven to me.

If you had an extra ticket to a Charlotte Knights game, who would you take with you? Why?

Thomas Rhett! I am a huuuugee country fan and especially of

Thomas Rhett. I not only love to follow his new songs but all the new updates with his life and family. He is definitely a role model I look up to for advice and would give anything to sit down and watch some baseball with him.

Is there a feature or activity at a Charlotte Knights game that you’d especially like to experience?

I think it’s be really cool to throw the first pitch at a game. Even as a competitive dancer and cheerleader, coordination isn’t always my friend so I’m not sure how far the ball will go but I am always open to trying new things.

---

I agree, that would be a fun experience!

As always, I want to thank Harley for visiting with us, and for sending along the fantastic pictures to go with the interview.

I encourage you to follow Harley on her title's Instagram account. It's a great way to keep track of everything she has going on!

I also definitely want to wish her the best of luck when she competes for the Miss North Carolina's Outstanding Teen title. It would be wonderful to have the first Section 36 visitor wear that crown!

Thanks again Harley, and good luck!

Francesca Collins Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has another visitor! Francesca Collins is passionate about ovarian cancer awareness, a talented pianist, and the current Miss Ocean Sands. I was thrilled that she was willing to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. I am also excited that she is our first visitor from the state of New Jersey!

So, let's see what happens when Francesca Collins Visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Ocean Sands crown?
Right after winning, I went over to a Queen's reception at this super yummy Italian restaurant and ate lots of pasta!

What has been the most pleasant surprise about your time as Miss Ocean Sands?
Before COVID, I was able to do the Christmas tree lighting in Gloucester Township. Everyone was so sweet and the town even made me a sign that says "Meet Francesca Collins Miss Ocean Sands." It's made out of street sign material so that is super cool and an awesome memento of my time!

What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Ocean Sands competition that will help you when you compete for Miss New Jersey?
Going into the Miss Ocean Sands competition, I honestly didn't
think I was going to win. It was the last local that I was eligible for and I remember thinking that this was the end of my time in pageants. I decided to throw out the "pageant personality" and just be Francesca and have fun with that.

How did you select your social impact initiative, “The Teal Butterfly Challenge”?
When I was 15, I went to an Ovarian Cancer Awareness walk in North Carolina. My mom and I went to support one of her closest friends whose sister passed away from Ovarian Cancer. The passion around OCA is incredible and unmatched. The sad part is that there was only one survivor at that walk. I was so moved by the love and passion that I saw that day and knew that this was something I wanted to get involved with. My mom's friend founded the Teal Butterfly Challenge later that year and I have been involved ever since. In the past decade, the challenge has reached countries in Europe!

Since its founding, the organization has rebranded to just "The Teal Butterfly" because the challenge is only one part of what we do. There are awareness runs, educational promotion, and even a girl scout patch geared towards promoting education and awareness about Ovarian Cancer.

As a talented pianist, what do you enjoy most about performing on stage?
I love sharing music with people. Music is one of the few mediums that transcends time and culture. We can all feel the emotions represented in music.

You are currently enrolled in law school. What are your plans for using that degree?
I'm trying to keep an open mind since I'm only in my first year of law school. At this point, I'm leaning towards going into estate or contracts law. I find those to be really fascinating areas of law.

If you could be a Disney Character for a week, who would you choose? Why?
This is such a hard question because I love so many Disney characters! I would have to say Elsa because I would love to be able to control ice and water!

If you had an extra ticket to a Philadelphia Phillies game, who would you bring with you? Why?
If I had an extra ticket to a Phillies game, I would bring my brother, John. He is a HUGE sports fan and we have a great time with lots of laughs whenever we spend time together.

Is there a feature or activity at a baseball game that you’d especially like to experience?
I would love to throw the first pitch! I think that would be so much fun!

---

I'd love to do that too!

As always, I want to thank Francesca for visiting with us, and for sending along the wonderful pictures to go with the interview.

As Francesca continues her time as Miss Ocean Sands, I encourage you to follow her Instagram account. It's a great way to keep track of everything she has going on!

I also definitely want to wish her the best of luck when she competes for the Miss New Jersey title. It would be wonderful to have the first Section 36 visitor wear that crown!

Thanks again Francesca, and good luck!

Savanna James Visits Section 36!

Deanna Webber Photography
Section 36 has another visitor! Savanna James is a breast cancer survivor, a talented dancer, and the current Miss Summerville. I was thrilled that she wanted to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. I am also excited that she is our first visitor from the state of South Carolina!

So, let's see what happens when Savanna James visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Summerville crown?

I cried, as cliche as that sounds. As someone who competed almost 6 years ago, I knew this was my last chance to make an impact before I “aged out.” I had a story to tell and I knew that Miss America would give me the platform necessary to reach people effectively. I didn't care if I won, as long as one person heard my story and it led them to be proactive in their breast health. To give you a more relatable answer, after the pageant, I went home and watched “Top Chef.” Don’t ask why... I just know in my heart that I have the potential to be a great chef someday haha. (Side note: I’m far from it.)

What has been the most pleasant surprise about your time as Miss Summerville?

The impact that can be made by being a titleholder, whether it

be local, state or national. When you wear the crown, or even the sash, and talk, people listen. People are drawn to you. It’s in your hands whether you take the chance to make a difference and impact those that come into contact with you. We have one shot at this life, and to not utilize and take advantage of the opportunities presented to us, is a travesty.

What part of the upcoming Miss South Carolina competition are you most nervous about?

I wouldn't say nervous, but I’m anticipating the week of competition itself! I think we are in Columbia, SC for a total of ten days. Being an old-timer (25 years old), that week is absolutely non-stop and being on top of my game all week will be something I have to prepare for! I better put down the Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes now…

You’ve been open about your decision to have a double mastectomy as a way to reduce your breast cancer risk. What’s the biggest thing you hope people will take away from your journey?

Oh man. This is hard to sum up, but I'll try!

At the start of all of this in 2019, I went into my yearly breast appointment thinking I was being preventative and staying on top of my health. It turned out that instead of being preventative, the procedure was life saving. I had a spot in my right breast.

What is harder to discuss for myself, and what is rarely talked about, is the fact that when treatments end, your journey is just beginning. There is so much left in this life that goes beyond a diagnosis, but, yet, is still so greatly affected by it. I’m going to be vulnerable here, but knowing that my story can help at least once person is what has saved my life. I had to learn to take a situation that is so undesirable and turn it into a platform for change and awareness. I saw an opportunity, not a closed door. This is what kept me fighting each and every day to do a little bit better, to be a little bit better and to share my story to at least one more person.

Knowing you are not alone, that there are others who are experiencing and going through a similar situation, is so powerful and can make all the difference during treatment. Cancer is an ugly word that strikes fear into hearts, creating an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness, but you do NOT have to feel powerless. You aren’t any less of a human for what you’re going through and feeling. Cancer doesn't define you.

I’ve partnered with two organizations that are near and dear to my heart: The Boon Project and Komen SC. My hope is that fellow survivors, and those going through treatments or a recent diagnosis, use my story to help look at their situations in a different light, and that others can see my story and understand the need for support and comfort, not only during treatment but through the years after. I just completed my third surgery this year in relation to breast cancer and I have been so blown away by the outreach and support of other survivors, their families and organizations.

As a talented tap dancer, what do you enjoy the most about performing on stage?

Being able to tell a story! Dance is really a form of universal

communication and I think a lot of people miss that. It breaks through language, cultural and educational barriers. In that 90 second performance, I can tell my breast cancer story to whoever was watching without uttering a single word. There’s SO much beauty in that.

How would you finish the sentence, “I get great satisfaction when ___”?

I know I am working to reach my potential. You never know who you can influence and impact! That's the beauty of public speaking and being able to have a position like this. We have a limited time on this earth, and in my mind, I want to go out knowing I did everything I could to make someone else’s life a little bit better.

If you could be a Disney Character for a week, who would you choose? Why?

A man after my own heart with this question... definitely Pocahontas! My dad's side of the family is Cherokee, so growing up, my family called me Pocahontas. (Fun Fact: Some still do.) Now, I know the story was mistold and romanticized, but I am very thankful that Disney provided inclusivity with a Native American character, especially one that was so strong willed, yet caring. My youngest dog is named Meeko, after the raccoon in the film, because he is my trouble-making sidekick. He also steals cookies like the character.

If you had an extra ticket to see the Yankees play the Braves, who would you take with you? Why?

This is a tough one for sure. Granny Merle, my grandma, is a die hard fan! Sometimes she gets too into the games, definitely mirroring that Bobby Cox era! It can get intense. Haha. Tyler, my boyfriend, would be my other choice. He was a college baseball player, and from what I heard, he was beyond good. They both love the Braves. I'm the only Yankees fan in my family, so neither one of them are too happy with me during baseball season! That's fine though.... I'll cheer for Aaron Judge any day. I mean winning the Homerun Derby as a rookie? Come on. Pure talent.

Is there a feature or activity at a baseball game that you’d especially like to experience?

One hundred percent I would love to try the "go-to" meal at every baseball park across America. There is nothing like sitting in the stands, eating a good meal and watching the game. In addition to the basics, this meal would HAVE to include boiled peanuts. I can’t resist. My dad was the state director of Dixie Majors Baseball so I was at every tournament and game across South Carolina. I think I basically survived off of boiled peanuts for the first twelve years of my life, so boiled peanuts are a nostalgia thing for me. On the other hand, if we are making wishes here, I would love to meet Aaron Judge. Fingers crossed...Sorry, T!

----

Those are fun goals! (She should probably check out The Sports Passport for help with her first one.)

As always, I want to thank Savanna for visiting with us, and for sending along the wonderful pictures to go with the interview.

As Savanna continues her time as Miss Summerville, I encourage you to check out her Instagram account. It’s a great way to keep track of everything she has going on!

I also definitely want to wish her the best of luck when she competes for the Miss South Carolina title. It would be wonderful to have the first Section 36 visitor wear that crown!

Thanks again Savanna, and good luck!
