With the recent Baseball Hall of Fame, elections, I started to wonder how the new inductees performed while I was is the park. I've already talked about Mariano Rivera. So, I was wondering about Edgar Martinez. I knew I had seen Martinez at least a few times later in his career. I wondered how he performed in games I attended. There’s only one way to find out. To the scorebooks!
I was slightly surprised that there were only four games. I know that it's not like he played on an AL East team, but for some reason I expected more.
How did he do?
Pretty good actually. While I didn't see him hit a home run, he certainly got plenty of hits. A .429 batting average is nothing to sneer at. Since his power numbers weren't what they might have been, his OPS isn't exactly legendary but really good.
Overall, I'd say that I got to see the "real" Edgar Martinez. This is exactly who he was. A really good hitter.
It's always nice when that happens.
How did Edgar Martinez perform when you were in the Park?

Alexis Chinn Visits Section 36
Section 36 has another visitor! Alexis Chinn is a traveler, a Red Sox fan, and the current Miss NH USA! I'm so glad she was willing
to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. She is now the second Miss USA state titleholder to visit with us, and I couldn't be more excited. I'm sure you'll love reading what she had to say!
Photo: Creative Sparks Imagery |
So, let’s see what happens when Alexis Chinn visits Section 36!
As Alexis continues her time as Miss NH USA, I encourage you to follow her on her official Miss NH USA Facebook page and Instagram account. It’ll be well worth your time!
Thanks again Alexis, and good luck!
What made you decide to compete for the Miss NH USA title?
I have been wanting to compete in the USA system for about 6 years now. I never did because I couldn’t justify asking my parents for that kind of money. Dresses, spray tans, shoes, jewelry, it all adds up so fast. This year, I finally felt financially comfortable to put that kind of investment towards myself.
How did you celebrate winning the crown?
Most of those who came to support me were those from my work family! Once I was crowned, they ran out and blew up these massive balloons! They each wrote me a note, hung them up everywhere, and basically threw me a surprise party at a nearby restaurant!
After growing up in the Seattle area, what brought you to NH?
School brought me out to New Hampshire! I originally went to St. John’s University in Queens, New York then transferred to Southern New Hampshire University to continue my studies in Biology.
What part of the upcoming Miss USA competition are you most nervous about?
The part of the Miss USA completion I’m most worried about is swimsuit. It’s perfecting the walk and making it look effortless. It’s something I will most likely be practicing daily.
Is there a specific goal you’d like to accomplish during your time as Miss NH USA?
During my reign of Miss New Hampshire I just want to make people smile. Whether it be at a Best Buddies event, or at a Christmas parade. Knowing that I made someone’s day, and that they’ll have that memory, is more than enough for me.
You’ve been traveling to many different states. Other than NH and WA, which has been your favorite to visit?
Other than Washington and New Hampshire, my favorite state to visit is California! I do plan on visiting every state, but as of right now that’s my number one. Besides the traffic, the laid back feeling, the beaches, and the sunshine just put me in the best mood.
What is your personal fitness routine?
For my fitness routine, I have to ultimately change it up every month or so. I get bored doing the same workouts in the same gym. I grew up playing and running track so I try to incorporate that as much as possible. It took some getting use to factoring snow into my morning runs.
If the Mariners are playing the Red Sox, which team are you cheering for?
I actually attended to Red Sox v. Mariners series last year! I surprised my boyfriend with tickets for his birthday! I did wear my Griffey jersey however. I grew up watching home games at Safeco Field! I was very torn during that game, I jumped up and cheered after a Sox home run and everyone seemed confused! They are both my teams, thankfully at least one of them makes the post season regularly!
Is there a feature or activity at Fenway Park that you’d especially like to experience?
I want to throw out the first pitch at a Red Sox game so bad! I don’t care what game or how many people are attending, that is something I haven’t stopped thinking about since being crowned.
What were you doing when the Red Sox won the 2018 World Series?
Game 5 of the World Series was actually the same night as our finals for Miss New Hampshire! I was running around the hotel in my gown with crown falling off, asking if the game had started! Once I was finished up, I was with my friends and family cheering on the Red Sox at a nearby restaurant! The Red Sox won, and I found out I was heading to Miss USA, it was an absolutely amazing day.
---
That must have been a pretty special night! A crowning followed by a championship!
As always, I want to give huge thanks to Alexis for doing this interview, and allowing me to use the amazing pictures to accompany it. They're really perfect! I also want to wish her the best of luck as she competes for the Miss USA crown. It would be amazing to have a former visitor take home that crown.

Should Chris Sale be the Red Sox Closer?
I'm sure you've all seen the video. With one inning left to try and close out a World Series championship, Alex Cora called on Chris Sale. It worked. Sale came in, marched to the mound, and made three straight batters look as foolish as possible on the way to striking out the side. Sale mentioned later that since he knew he was only going the one inning, he was really able to let it fly. If he got those three hitters, he was all done. And it worked to perfection. Can you imagine that result over and over as a closer?
Ok. That's stupid. You don't take your ace and make him a closer. Everyone knows an ace is better than a bullpen guy.
What about David Price? He pitched really well out of the bullpen in the playoffs too. Should he be the closer? Or, Rick Porcello? He did everything asked from him whenever he came in from the pen. Should they be the new closer?
No. Of course not. Even a great #2 or #3 pitcher is way too valuable to take him away just to pitch out of the pen.
Ok. What about Nathan Eovaldi. He was a decent starting pitcher for the Sox. But, he was fantastic out of the pen in the playoffs. Should he be the closer? Nope. Even he was too good to be stuck in that role. The Sox signed him to be a starter.
The 2019 Red Sox aren't the only teams to make a similar decision. The Dodgers aren't expected to turn Clayton Kershaw into a closer, even though he was able to pitch out of the pen in the playoffs. Even going back in time, the Red Sox never put Pedro in the pen, even though he showed he could do it. Really well. Can you imagine Pedro only needing to pitch one inning at a time? That would have been pure enjoyment. But it never happened.
Sometimes, teams had to try starters as closers because of other reasons. People like Curt Schilling and John Smoltz were closers because of injury. Derek Lowe was a closer while he tried to figure out his struggles. Lowe was actually pretty good at closing, and Smoltz was absolutely dominant in the role. But, in all three cases the teams brought the pitchers back into the starting role. Because they all knew that if a pitcher is good enough to start, he's much more valuable in the starting role. Time and again teams looked to turn elite bullpen arms into starters.
If they were good enough.
The only players left in the bullpen were the ones teams finally gave up on. No matter how many times teams tried to get Joe Kelly to translate his talent into a starting gig, he couldn't. They were forced to keep him in the pen, just like teams have been forced to do for years.
So, imagine how surprised they all must have been to see one of those failed starters get elected to the Hall of Fame. Imagine the realization that a guy why wasn't good enough to start for his ow team was unanimously elected! How many #5 starters wish they had been just a little bit worse than they are. Imagine what Clay Buchholz must be thinking knowing that if teams didn't think he could start, he might be on his way to the Hall of Fame. He was actually punished by having too much talent.
Because Mariano Rivera is not a good pitcher. If he were, he would have been used to pitch more often. If he could get guys out the second time through the order, teams would have let him. But, that wasn't the case. He only had the one pitch, so he had to get his inning and run.
How frustrating it must be to know that you’re just a little bit too talented.
Aces don’t become closers.

The Ten Best Games I've Ever Attended
You may have realized that the Red Sox have been involved in some pretty exciting games lately. Add that to the exciting victory this weekend by the New England Patriots, and “great games” have been on my mind today. I wondered if I had every discussed great games here on the blog. It turns out that I have, about nine years ago. Back then I made a list of the ten best games I had ever seen, and another of the ten best I had ever seen in person. I decided that it was time to update that list, both to see if any newer games are worth discussing and to save you the trouble of searching through ten years of posts. So, here I'll present the ten best games I've ever seen in person.
For this exercise, I probably could call it “important” games as opposed to “best”. There aren't many pitchers duels on this list, and if there are that's not why they're there. Maybe I should do an “exciting game” list to capture Pedro-Colon match ups or huge ninth inning comebacks. This list seems to be more of a “tell your grandkids you were there” sort of list.
So, with all the explanations out of the way, here is my list presented in no particular order...except that they're in order of greatness from least to most.
10. October 10, 1999. Cleveland Indians vs Boston Red Sox
This was game four of the 1999 ALDS. The Sox had fallen into a early 0-2 hole in the series. The Sox won game three at home, but still trailed in the series 1-2. This wasn’t good enough for Mike Hargrove. He knew one thing. Pedro Martinez was looming over a potential deciding game five. Sure, Pedro had to leave game one with an injury, and his availability for game five was in question. But, he was out there. Hargrove wanted no part in a game five with Pedro on the mound. To avoid it? He called on Bartolo Colon to start the game on short rest. He didn’t save him to potentially duel with Pedro on regular rest. He wanted to end the series right there in game four. It didn’t work. Colon got lit up. So did every other pitcher called on that night. The Red Sox stormed all over the Indians 23-7 to take the series back to Cleveland. It was an amazing show. It was a poor decision. It was a fantastic game.
9. October 20, 2007. Cleveland Indians vs. Boston Red Sox
This was game six of the 2007 ALCS. I’ve already talked about the game here, so I won’t bore you with the details. You know the drill though. Sox down in the series. J.D. Drew earns his contract. Sox win.
8. April 27, 2002. Tampa Bay Devil Rays vs. Boston Red Sox
A Rays game in April? How could that be great? This one is unique on this list in that I didn’t know going to the game that it would at least me “something” special about the day. This one was completely out of left field. Or, I guess, the pitchers mound. Of course, that was the day Derek Lowe decided to announce himself as a starting pitcher. He threw a no-hitter that day as the Red Sox crushed the Devil Rays. I was in the park that day, and had chills for about three innings. The ninth inning was all standing and cheering and shaking. If that’s not great, I don’t know what is.
7. October 16, 1999. New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox.
Game three of the 1999 ALCS. In the first trip by the Red Sox to the ALCS in quite some time, they faced the Yankees. It was the first ever play-off meeting between the two. Down 0-2 in the series, the Sox sent Pedro Martinez to the mound facing Roger Clemens. Old ace vs. new ace. Past vs. present. The hype was beyond the moon. Once again, Pedro rose to the challenges. Once again, Clemens scurried away dragging his tail. Pedro struck out 12 over seven innings of shutout ball. Along the way, he handed the Yankees the only loss they would get in the ’99 postseason
6. October 25, 2007. Colorado Rockies vs. Boston Red Sox.
Game 2 of the 2007 World Series. After the drubbing the Red Sox gave the Rockies in Game One of the 2007 World Series, we were ready for blood as we sat down in Game 2. Ubaldo Jimenez vs Curt Schilling certainly seemed like an epic mismatch. As it turned out, the Rockies actually led in this game for a bit. But, so timely hitting and good pitching let the Sox prevail, and take a 2-0 World Series lead.
5. October 23, 2004. St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox.
This was game one of the 2004 World Series. The Sox were finally back in the Fall Classic. Would this finally be the year? While this would rank pretty high due to mystique alone, the game itself was an absolute nail-biter. The Sox couldn’t hold a lead. Finally, Mark Bellhorn clanked one off the Pesky Pole for a lead the Sox would finally hold. They were on their way.
4. October 17, 2004. New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox.
Game four of the ALCS. The Key to it all. Without this win, the seven that followed it don't happen. The Sox don't win the World Series in 2004. Who knows what happens after that? Plus, this was a great game. An epic steal. A blown save. A walk-off home run. It had it all.
3. July 13, 1999. National League vs. American League.
Yup. It's an exhibition game. But, what a game! What a pre-game! The ceremony celebrating the top 100 players of all-time would rank this game pretty high on its own. The Ted Williams entrance would put it near the top. When Pedro came out and embarrassed the National League, you get the number two game on my list. All-Stars everywhere, and Pedro making it look like they should be in Little League. I still get chills.
2. October 19, 2013. Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox.
Game six of the ALCS. My first ever clincher. It was always the thing missing from my attendance resume. I had never seen the Red Sox clinch anything while I was in the park. I saw the Yankees clinch the division. I’ve seen the Yankees clinch the American League. But, nothing like that for the Sox. Until this game. On top of that, it was a pretty exciting game, with Victorino hitting the late grand slam to seal the deal. Staying late to watch the postgame ceremony was just icing on the cake.
1. October 30, 2013. St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox.
Game six of the World Series. Not long after my first clincher, I saw my second clincher the very next time I went to the park. If this isn’t the top on anyone’s list...I can’t imagine what would be. For the only time in the last 100 years or so, the Red Sox won the World Series at Fenway Park. To see the team all pile onto the field was something out of a dream. The game probably wasn’t as close as we thought it was. But, when you’re counting outs starting in the first inning, this get a little tense. Thankfully Koji was able to finish it off.
Well, there's my updated list.
What's yours?

Megan Soucy Visits Section 36!
Section 36 has another visitor! Megan Soucy is a dancer, a Red Sox fan, and the current Miss Gate City I'm so glad she was willing to
visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. I'm sure you'll love reading what she had to say!
visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. I'm sure you'll love reading what she had to say!
So, let’s see what happens when Megan Soucy visits Section 36!
---
As Megan continues her time as Miss Gate City, I encourage you to follow her on her official Miss Gate City Facebook. It’ll definitely be worth your time!
How did you celebrate winning the Miss Gate City crown?
Right after winning the Miss Gate City crown, I remember all of my new sister title holders coming on stage to hug me and were so excited for me! Miss Gate City is my first title in the program so my family and I were so incredibly excited! I actually had to drive back to school that night due to rehearsals I had the next day, so instead of celebrating with my family, I got back and my roommates and I spent some time together and went out to eat.
Is there a specific goal you'd like to accomplish during your time as Miss Gate City?
During my time as Miss Gate City I just hope to stay confident and focused throughout my year. As I mentioned, this is my first title so everything is very new to me and going to Miss New Hampshire is a new amazing experience.
What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Gate City competition that will help you at Miss NH in the spring?
During the competition, I learned that it’s better to enjoy the day and have fun rather than worrying about the next phase of competition. At the beginning of the day I was able to relax and tell myself that whatever happens is what is meant to be, and I made sure I was 100% myself throughout the day.
How did you select your platform, “Dancing for a Change”?
Dancing has been a love of mine for the past 13 years, so when
choosing my platform I knew I wanted to incorporate the art somehow. I also have had numerous experiences dancing at benefit shows to help raise funds for various causes, so I knew I could combine the two and be able to help in a way that was also entertaining to an audience.
As a talented dancer, what is your favorite part about performing on stage?
My favorite part about performing on stage is being able to tell a story. Whether the piece is an emotional contemporary dance, or an energetic musical theater number, there is always a story to tell. Getting to portray a character and put myself in a completely different mindset is truly magical to me.
Of your many dancing performances, do you have a favorite that stands out in your mind?
It’s definitely hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to choose I would say Project Green. Project Green is a show at my college that is student run, and helps to raise awareness for mental health. I love this show because you can tell that the choreographers pour out their hearts into their pieces and their dancers portray the message beautifully. I’ve been grateful to me in this show the past two years and hope to be chosen again in the future.
Who's your favorite current Red Sox player? Why?
I would have to say Mookie Betts! I think he has so much talent and since he is still young and it’s early in his career that there’s nowhere to go for him but up!
Is there a feature or activity at Fenway Park that you'd especially like to experience?
I would love to go to a concert that’s at Fenway Park! I feel like it would be a completely different atmosphere after being transformed into stage rather than a ball field.
What were you doing when the Red Sox won the 2018 World Series?
When the Red Sox won the World Series this year, I unfortunately wasn’t able to watch due to a rehearsal I had. I remember during rehearsal, someone went to check their phone and saw that the Red Sox had won and we all got so excited!
---
Hate that she couldn't watch the game, but love the dedication to follow along during rehearsal!
As always, I want to give huge thanks to Megan for doing this interview. I also appreciate her providing the fantastic pictures to accompany it. They're really perfect! I also want to wish her the best of luck as she competes for the Miss New Hampshire crown this spring. It would be so much fun to have another former visitor take home that crown.
As Megan continues her time as Miss Gate City, I encourage you to follow her on her official Miss Gate City Facebook. It’ll definitely be worth your time!
Thanks again Megan, and good luck!

Letting Pitchers Pitch
Yup. I did it again. I watched the 2018 Red Sox World Series DVD again today. Every time I do, I seem to pick up on something new. Today, it was something I think I probably realized, but just didn't
click until today.
Not only did Alex Cora allow his starting pitchers to pitch on days they didn't start, he actually let them pitch on days they did start too.
In past postseasons, the Sox have been plagued by starting pitching problems. The starters were only going four or five innings at most, taking the bullpen, and spiraling down from there. Hard to win a series when our long reliever pitches more than your starters.
But, that didn't happen this year. Quite a few starters were going six or seven innings during their starts. You might think it's because they were pitching better than in years past. I think it might be something else. Cora was letting them pitch more than in years passed. It was watching David Price's fourth inning of Game 2 that really clicked for me.
Price entered the inning with a one-run lead. While he had pitched well in his last playoff start, he did have that history of not winning in the postseason. This is how the inning started.
Single.
Single
Walk.
Ick. This was the Price people were afraid of. If Farrell were still managing, what do you think would have happened? Would Price have faced the next batter after that "meltdown" with a one-run lead? I'm not sure.
Price then gave up a flyball. While it got the first out, it also tied the game. Would that have been enough to keep him in the game? I doubt it. If he was still pitching, the strike out of Hernandez may have allowed him to pitch to Puig. But, when Puig hit the run scoring single, I can't imagine Farrell wouldn't be walking to the mound before Price had the ball back in his glove. Sure, there were two outs. But, first and third with a starter struggling in a key game? He'd be on the bench. Heck, Francona might have pulled him there. But Cora doesn't. And, Price rewards him by getting the last out of the inning, and holding the Dodgers to just the two runs.
So, sure the Sox got an extra out from Price? What's the big deal?
The big deal is the fifth inning. Price set the side down in order. Quickly. Easily. Pitching an inning that the bullpen didn't have to.
Then he did it again in the sixth, with a newly minted lead in the game. The sixth was even better than the fifth. Once again, the starter recovered and pitched an inning so the bullpen didn't have to.
By the time Price finally stays on the bench in the seventh, you're into your preferred part of the bullpen. Kelly-Eovaldi-Kimbrel closed out the win. You used the three relievers you wanted to use, and didn't have to pitch together two important innings in the middle of the game. Just because Cora let the starters pitch.
Now, will that work every time? Of course not. Cora let EdRo face one batter too many in game four. And, it almost cost him dearly. But, generally, I like the idea of letter pitchers pitch. Starters can give up three runs and not have terrible games. If the tradeoff is having fresh relievers for when you really need them? I think that's a gamble worth taking.
And, apparently, so does Cora.

Being Spoiled Stinks
This weekend, Boston sports fans got another reminder that they are living an absolutely charmed life right now. Yesterday, the Patriots advanced to their eighth straight AFC championship game. (Say that again. It sounds even more ridiculous the second time.) This comes just months after the Red Sox won their fourth World Series title in the last fifteen years. That means the Patriots are just two wins away from (again) celebrating a Super Bowl title at Fenway during a Red Sox ring ceremony. Add in the Celtics and Bruins titles this century, and you get an embarrassment of riches that may navel be seen by any fanbase ever again.
So, I'm sure nobody outside of Boston wants to hear about the downside of winning so many titles...but there is one.
Well, a couple really. There’s the expense of buying championship memorabilia for all 11 titles. It’s getting to be a lot.
There’s also complacency. Some of it is on my part. “I won’t buy a ticket this divisional round game...I’ll catch them next time." Assuming that there will be a next time, like there has been for the so many years. But it’s also on everyone else’s part too.
I was shopping yesterday, and saw lots of Red Sox World Series stuff on clearance. While I enjoyed grabbing a cup at 75% off, it also meant there probably wasn’t more stuff coming out. I guess companies decided not to make stuff they had in the past. And that’s too bad
While at Target this weekend, they were unloading new boxes of Wheaties. They had Russell Wilson on the front. So they went right from Uncle Drew to Wilson. Guess no Red Sox championship box this time.
Target also didn’t have a commemorative baseball card team set. When the Sox won in 2004, two companies put team sets out. Now? Not worth anyone’s time. (Yeah, there was a ToppsNOW set but that’s not really the same thing)
Newspapers were harder to find. The Sox weren’t on the front page of every newspaper in the country like they were in 2004. They were barely on the front page of sports sections. They weren’t a story anymore.
The one that really got me was the NESN DVD. They didn’t make one. Can you believe that? Remember, they made a video for the 2003 Red Sox. A team the LOST the ALCS. They got a video. But, a World Champion? Eh. Been there, done that. Sure, maybe times have changed. Maybe streaming has made DVD production silly. But, really? Still not worth it?
So, while I’m not about to complain about too much winning...I wish some things hadn’t changed. I miss the buzz.
And I want the stuff.

Lauren Fohlin Revisits Section 36!
You probably remember Lauren Fohlin from her visit with Section 36 just about a year ago. Since that time, a year has passed, she
won a new title, (Miss White Mountains Region), and the Red Sox have had some highlights as well. I was thrilled that she was interested in visiting with us to update us on all those changes...and maybe a few more. I'm sure you'll love catching up with her!
So, let's see what happens when Lauren Fohlin revisits Section 36!

How did you celebrate being crowned Miss White Mountains Region?
Just like most of us do, I went out to dinner with my new director, my judges, and my sister queen, Josie, who also happens to be my best friend!
Just like most of us do, I went out to dinner with my new director, my judges, and my sister queen, Josie, who also happens to be my best friend!
What has surprised you during your time with this crown?
The opportunities have been endless with this title! My director, Kendra, makes sure we’re doing as many appearances as we can and keeping us up to date with all the events going on up north here in New Hampshire! I’ve been amazed by the people I’ve met thus far.

How will having competed for Miss NH last year help you this second time around?
I like to think your first time competing at a state level is like being
a rookie. You get into the swing of things to prep you for the future! With that being said I believe having been there last year will help me know what to expect moving forward.
What made you change your competition talent from vocal to dance?
I wanted to try something new and show everyone a different side
of me that they’ve never seen. I’ve been a performer most of my life from singing, to dancing, and acting. My platform is “Keeping the arts Alive: One Beat at a Time” and most of my volunteer work is done choreographing musicals.

How have you been able to further support your platform in your new role?
This past summer I was hired at the Derryfield Repertory Theatre (DRT) in Hooksett, NH. Through this opportunity I was able to dedicate 500+ hours of community service to my platform alone!

What is your personal fitness routine? After losing about 80 pounds within the past year and a half I have developed a fitness routine that works well for my body. I try and get to the gym at least 3-4 times a week and do 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weight training. I get in a workout everyday with the toddlers I teach dance to at the YMCA!
Were you able to watch the Red Sox in the World Series?
Yes I was! My dad and I have become Red Sox fans since my uncle
passed away in 2004. He was a huge Red Sox fan and I think it’s a way we still honor him!

What did you think of David Price’s postseason performance?
I’m just happy he got his first postseason win after twelve tries!
What was your favorite moment from the 2018 playoffs?
Who doesn’t love winning?

I'm sure we all agree with that!
I want to give a huge thank you to Lauren for wanting to come back and visit with us again. It was so much fun to discuss all the changes in the last year! Another thank you to her for providing all the pictures to go along with the interview. They really spruce up the post, don’t you think?
As Lauren continues her time as Miss White Mountains Region, be sure to keep track of her on the official Miss White Mountains Region Facebook and Instagram accounts! That way you won't miss a thing.
I also want to wish Lauren luck at the upcoming Miss New Hampshire competition. There will once again be quite a few members of the Section 36 family on stage with her this year. It would be so fantastic to have another one of them bring home the crown!
Thanks again for the revisit Lauren, and good luck!
