World's Greatest Card Chase Repack

My local Target hasn't had blasters of 2019 Topps yet. I had to resort to going to Targets farther away in order to get cards for myself. But, I keep checking...almost out of curiosity at this point...to see if the shipment finally arrived close to home. At this point I was starting to wonder if someone had swooped in and bought the store out before I even saw cards on the shelves. 

But, when I got there today, the 2019s had arrived. The shelf was full of blasters waiting to be purchased. I reached for one, but just wasn't feeling it. I had been able to get my fix already...and it seemed like piling on at this point. That's when another blaster caught my eye.

Yup. The World's Greatest Card Chase! If I had ever seen those types of repacks before, I didn't remember them. Today, for some reason, they called to me. For one thing, they promised twice as many packs as 2019 Topps for the same price. (I had no delusions of getting a Cy Young) I generally enjoy repacks. They fit my style of collecting to get bulk packs. It allows me the chance to get stars and Red Sox players from brands I don't often buy. And, since they're packs, I still have a chance at some hits. I've gotten 1 of 1 and chrome parallels out of repacks just like I can from standard blasters. So, today I decided it was worth a try. Even though I've pretty much hit my limit of 2012 Triple play.

Here's what came out of this box.

I don't really know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't this! One pack of 2018 Big League, and 13 junk wax packs? What an odd collection. I also noticed that the box lied. It said I would get cards from the last 30 years of collecting. But, you'll notice, the 1987 Topps packs is 32 years old. So, what was the tally?

Now, it's sort of fun to be able to open packs that old. After all, there are a couple chances at a Griffey rookie, or other cards that were fun to pull at the time. But, I bet I have every Red Sox card from this era. And, the other cards aren't exactly in high demand by others. So, it's kind of a bust. But, still fun.

I'm sure you all know what these cards look like by now, but here are the Red Sox that were in the packs just to show.

Realy only the Greenwell would have been cool to have pulled even back in the day. I didn't get a Griffey, but I did get a Sheffield and Ramon Martinez rookie. So, those were fun trips down memory lane.

I was also interested in this pack.

I have no idea what these are. But, they claim they were only available in 1992. (So...how did I get one in 2018...?) They look just the the Conlon Collection cards that I actually collected in 1992. But, they're all Ruth. Interesting. Anyone have any of these?

So, there's the box. Nothing to write home about. But, something to write here about. Has anyone else opened this style of repack?

As we dive into this pack, each set is hoping to grab the series lead after 1988 tied things up with a victory in pack 28 and they tied pack 29. Who will do it with this pack? Let's see!

Yankees -2

 Ouch. That's not helping things. This painfully boring card of Dan Pasqua starts the pack off in a deep hole.

Red Sox +2, Hall of Fame +1

 That's more like it! This dual scoring card is the perfect thing to climb into positive numbers. I'm hoping Rice made contact on the swing. Otherwise he's looking in the completely wrong direction.

A great early card of the legendary Greg Maddux. One of the nicer action shots too.

Red Sox +2

Oh, in 1988 this card would have been the pull of the pack. This young outfield was going to be carrying the Sox to multiple championships. (In the end, only one of them ended up with a ring in Boston.) Not to mention, it's kind of a rookie card for Burks and Benzinger. Too back it's not worth six points.

That's where the scoring ends with this powerhouse pack! Four points will be tough for 1990 to beat!

 But, it's starting off on the right foot! I'm not sure I ever figured out which Decade Roger was supposed to be the player of. If it was the "80's" wouldn't he be "Players of the last Decade"?

The second Cubs Hall of Famer in this battle gets 1990 another point.

And that's where the scoring ends. Can you believe it? 1990 pulled it out! Five points was enough to rip the round out of the hands of 1988. Crazy!

As we dive into this pack, 1990 has retaken the lead in the match thanks to its resounding victory in pack nine! Can it extend its lead? Let's see!

1988 Jumps right into it. This Murray card brings a quick point. Once again, not a fan of how the stripes on Murray's sleeve contrast with the stripes on the card. Especially on his left sleeve.

Oops. Even though the card is only half filled with Yankees, it still loses the full two points!

This great card of Reggie Jackson brings 1988 another point, and takes its total back to zero. Can it keep that momentum?

Yikes. Or, you know, completely reverse the momentum? This Yankees card once again makes the pack go negative.

Unfortunately, that's where the scoring ends for this pack. Can the 1990 back somehow do even worse?

The 1990 set takes the advantage with another wonderful looking Red Sox card. Some might say it's too tightly cropped since it cut off his arm and foot. But, I like the idea that there's just so much action that it can't be contained within the frame.

Good news for 1990, that's where the scoring ends! It grabs its second pack in a row to extend its lead.
