What’s Missing from My Collection?

Not too long ago, I mentioned that I was on the hunt for a Ted Williams card. It occurred to me that as a Red Sox fan, and baseball card collector it was an outrage that my collection didn’t have one already. You were all very helpful in steering me in the right direction. Well, now I need your help again.

What else is my collection missing? I seem to have spent so much time amassing the recent releases; I’ve ignored the quality of previous years. I have the whole team set from 2010 Bowman platinum, but don’t have a Wade Boggs rookie card. I have pages and pages of 2011 cards, but only a handful of cards from before 1975. Shouldn’t I remedy that? Where should I begin?

What’s your one card? What card makes you say, “You claim that you collect Red Sox cards, but don’t have that one?” Is it a Roger Clemens rookie? Dustin Pedroia? Bobby Doerr? Harry Hooper? Dick Radatz? Is there one card you’ve been waiting to add to your collection as well? Or is there a card you already have that you just know is the crown jewel? Is there more than one?

What card should every serious Red Sox card collector own?

  1. In my opinion, its a crime you don't have a Boggs RC. I have a Topps one (perfect condition) I'd trade you.

  2. I'd rather have 1000 cards that I need then to spend the same amount of money for one Ted Williams card. I will get the Williams cards after I have nothing else to buy...

  3. No '60 Yaz yet. That's a tweener one for me. It's not old enough to be "cool old" and not new enough to be a player I followed.

  5. '56 Williams and '60 Yaz.

I would think a Boggs rookie card is obtainable at a reasonable price.

As for me, I've always wanted a vintage Chuck Klein card. Or maybe Richie Ashburn's or Robin Roberts' rookie cards. Or maybe a Phillies card from the T206 set. Or maybe . . . see what you've gone and made me do!!?

  6. Does Carlton Fisk's 1972 Topps rookie card figure in your thinking? Or do you have one?

  8. Each year, after I get my income tax return, I purchase 1 expensive card. I bought all the regular Topps issued Willimas one at a time that way and a 60 Yaz that way. This year I am debating on either a T205 Speaker or a 48-49 Leaf Willimas. Gonna depend on the size of my return.

  9. The standout horizontal cards of 56T Williams and 60T Yaz make those the easy call for me.
