Audrey Getman Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has a new visitor! Audrey Getman is a world traveler, a history buff, and the current Miss Gate City. I was so excited that she was willing to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more.

So let's see what happens when Audrey Getman visits Section 36!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Gate City crown?

The day that I won Miss Gate City 2020 I actually competed in two competitions on the same day. That meant two full competitions all packed into the time that we’d usually do one competition. Because of that, I was understandably exhausted! On my way home I grabbed some dinner, and then I actually went straight to bed.

What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Gate City competition that will help you at Miss New Hampshire?

One thing that I’ve found in my entire journey this season is that with talent specifically, and this sounds super corny, I have to believe in myself and believe in the song. When I felt myself getting nervous in the song during this competition, I powered through. Apparently that also resonated in the song and added an element of power and emotion to the performance, so that was something that I was able to learn how to do.

What are you most looking forward to about your time as Miss Gate City?

I’m really looking forward to promoting my social impact initiative

and getting to work on different service opportunities. One of my favorite things to do is donate my time to community service projects. I wasn’t able to do much of this during my time in college because of how hectic my schedule was. Now that I’ve graduated, I’m excited to start doing more community service!

How did you select your social impact initiative “Promoting the Value of History”?

One of the things I mentioned above that I’m excited about is my social impact initiative, “Learn the Past: Promoting the Value of History”. I just graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Classics. My love of history and classics has transformed into something bigger than I anticipated. I want to continue working with both fields and researching the different ideas that I have. That’s why I thought about this for my social impact initiative, because not only is it my entire life, but because I really believe that learning from history influences our future. There is the quote, “Those who do not learn the past are condemned to repeat it,” which is part of where my social impact initiative gets its name. History has been very cyclical, and the humanities have been extremely neglected. We don’t stress their importance as much as we should. I really enjoy learning history. I want to use my social impact initiative to help members of younger generations find enjoyment in it too. History isn’t just about learning and memorizing dates. It’s seeing how these big, great events have shaped the world we live in. I want other people to be able to see that too.

As a talented singer, what types of songs are your favorite to sing?

I love a good female ballad, I find them very empowering. I used to

sing a lot of Adele because her songs are super powerful and meaningful. I also love Disney music, and the occasional showtune. I pretty much just sing whatever pops into my head.

You’ve been able to do quite a bit of traveling. What your favorite place that you’ve visited?

The best place I’ve been to so far has been Athens, Greece. It was my first of two study abroad experiences (the second was a short 10-day January term trip to Rome). I was there for five weeks in the Summer of 2017. One of those five weeks was a travel week across various ancient and historical sites near Athens. Greece is my happy place and every single day I dream of going back. Hopefully I can study there in graduate school!

Who is your favorite Red Sox player? Why?

This may sound a bit weird because he’s such a rookie, but I love Michael Chavis. I think he’s outstanding and I’m just really excited to see where he goes in baseball, and I really hope he stays with the Red Sox. Mookie Betts is a close second, and before Chavis came on the team, Mookie was my favorite.

Is there a feature or activity at Fenway Park you would especially

like to experience?

 I’ve never sat on or been to the Green Monster, but I would really

love to someday. I think it would be such a fun experience!

What were you doing when the Red Sox won the 2018 World Series?

I was in a restaurant in my college town because they had a bunch of TVs and I had just finished a weekly student government meeting. A bunch of the members of student government got a big table at the restaurant and we ate and watched the game. It’s a relatively small restaurant, so we were able to get there before it got completely crowded. I have videos of the last at bat where Manny Machado went down on one knee after swinging, and the entire place just erupted. After, everyone poured out onto the street and sidewalks. Everyone was singing Sweet Caroline at the top of their lungs, and it was just such a great way to ring in my senior year.

Megan Soucy Visits Section 36!

Section 36 has another visitor! Megan Soucy is a dancer, a Red Sox fan, and the current Miss Gate City I'm so glad she was willing to

visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. I'm sure you'll love reading what she had to say!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Gate City crown?

Right after winning the Miss Gate City crown, I remember all of my new sister title holders coming on stage to hug me and were so excited for me! Miss Gate City is my first title in the program so my family and I were so incredibly excited! I actually had to drive back to school that night due to rehearsals I had the next day, so instead of celebrating with my family, I got back and my roommates and I spent some time together and went out to eat.

Is there a specific goal you'd like to accomplish during your time as Miss Gate City?

During my time as Miss Gate City I just hope to stay confident and focused throughout my year. As I mentioned, this is my first title so everything is very new to me and going to Miss New Hampshire is a new amazing experience. 

What did you learn about yourself at the Miss Gate City competition that will help you at Miss NH in the spring?

During the competition, I learned that it’s better to enjoy the day and have fun rather than worrying about the next phase of competition. At the beginning of the day I was able to relax and tell myself that whatever happens is what is meant to be, and I made sure I was 100% myself throughout the day. 

How did you select your platform, “Dancing for a Change”?

Dancing has been a love of mine for the past 13 years, so when

choosing my platform I knew I wanted to incorporate the art somehow. I also have had numerous experiences dancing at benefit shows to help raise funds for various causes, so I knew I could combine the two and be able to help in a way that was also entertaining to an audience. 

As a talented dancer, what is your favorite part about performing on stage?

My favorite part about performing on stage is being able to tell a story. Whether the piece is an emotional contemporary dance, or an energetic musical theater number, there is always a story to tell. Getting to portray a character and put myself in a completely different mindset is truly magical to me. 

Of your many dancing performances, do you have a favorite that stands out in your mind?

It’s definitely hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to choose I would say Project Green. Project Green is a show at my college that is student run, and helps to raise awareness for mental health. I love this show because you can tell that the choreographers pour out their hearts into their pieces and their dancers portray the message beautifully. I’ve been grateful to me in this show the past two years and hope to be chosen again in the future.

Who's your favorite current Red Sox player? Why?

I would have to say Mookie Betts! I think he has so much talent and since he is still young and it’s early in his career that there’s nowhere to go for him but up!

Is there a feature or activity at Fenway Park that you'd especially like to experience?

I would love to go to a concert that’s at Fenway Park! I feel like it would be a completely different atmosphere after being transformed into stage rather than a ball field. 

What were you doing when the Red Sox won the 2018 World Series?

When the Red Sox won the World Series this year, I unfortunately wasn’t able to watch due to a rehearsal I had. I remember during rehearsal, someone went to check their phone and saw that the Red Sox had won and we all got so excited!

Kylee-Anne Drew Visits Section 36!

excited she agreed to visit with us to discuss those topics, and a few more. I'm sure you'll enjoy what she had to say as much as I did!

How did you celebrate winning the Miss Gate City Crown?

The night of the Miss Gate City Pageant I celebrated with my family and friends at a restaurant near by. It was a great time with family and being able to see my brother who worked in NYC at the time. We actually celebrated both my win of the title, his new job at Apple, and his big move to San Francisco at the same time! It was a night filled with love and excitement.

What has surprised you the most about your time as Miss Gate City?

Just being able to represent and get to know another area of our incredible state of NH is both surprising, and rewarding. It has been an amazing experience to meet and develop relationships with so many people, businesses, and organizations in the communities of Nashua!

What portion of the upcoming Miss NH competition are you most nervous about?

Having nerves about anything is an emotion that every human faces. I guess I wouldn’t say any particular phase of competition is making me nervous specifically, it’s more of an overall excitement that I have for the competition as a whole. I just want to make sure I portray my personality to the best of my abilities, and really just have fun and taking every moment in.

How did you select your platform: “Turn the Beat Around”?

My platform “Turn the Beat Around; Raising awareness about heart disease”, is a cause that really hits home for me. As a woman who has heart disease deeply rooted in my family heritage, it is very important for me to take good care of my heart and overall health. As the #1 cause of death for both men and women in America, I believe it is incredibly important that our communities and especially our youth, are educated on the importance of keeping a healthy heart. Partnering with the American Heart Association has given me a larger outlet with information and resources to do so. Although prevention is very important, knowing how to take action in a situation dealing with heart disease could be the difference between life and death. So trying to educate as many citizens on the signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, and

stroke, and how to perform CPR, is one of the missions of my platform.

Your competition talent is tap dance. What is your favorite part about dancing on stage?

As a competitive dancer from a young age, I have always loved the way being on stage makes me feel. The excitement of being able to entertain an audience with a passion of mine genuinely makes me happy. The reason I have always favored the art of tap dancing over other genres of dance, is because with tap dancing I am not only a dancer, I become a musician. As a kid I always wanted

to play the drums, but with tap dancing I can do just that except instead of using my hands and drum sticks, just hand me a pair of tap shoes.

If you had a free weekend, how would you most want to fill your time?

If I had a free weekend I would take that opportunity to travel even if it is just a small road trip. I love to see new places and communities.

Who is your favorite current Red Sox player? Why?

My favorite current Red Sox player is Dustin Pedroia. Since he was drafted in 2004 I have enjoyed watching him play over the years!

If you can’t sit is Section 36, where do/would you like to sit to watch a Red Sox game?

If I couldn’t sit in Section 36, I would like to sit in the dugout box around the 30’s sections! It would definitely be a cool experience sitting so close to the action!

What is your favorite memory from the 2017 Red Sox season?

My favorite part of the 2017 season has to be the first game at Fenway on opening day against the Pittsburg Pirates! It’s always great looking forward to baseball season and coming out with our first win after a great game.
